Everchanging Uluru NT

Uluru in the rain
The Northern Territory is sparsly populated with just over 218,000 people (1% of Australian population) and the capital city is Darwin. The population is not concentrated in coastal regions but rather along the Stuart Highway. The other major settlements are Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, and Katherine. Darwin is a beautiful tropical city on the edge of the Timor Sea and is the main port of entry from Asia. It is a cosmopolitan and vibrant multicultural city. There are lots of great things to see and do in Darwin City and this site gives you a variety of holiday accommodation places to choose from when you visit the Top End. Just click here. As a tourist, you need to be aware of the danger of crocodiles when visiting here. Just do not swim in small billabongs (water contained in a still pool) and waterfall areas, and fish only from a very large boat, preferably a tour boat. If you abide by these very sensible rules, you will be quite safe. Obey the danger signs and use common sense. Crocodile warning signs are displayed at the edge of waterways if it is known to be inhabited by crocodiles. You may not see them but be sure that they will be watching YOU, so NEVER swim in any waterways in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Crocodiles move extremely fast and you will not see them coming for you. Swimming in the Ocean in the Northern Territory can be done in the dry season (May to October). Unfortunately, when it is hot, swimming on NT beaches during the humid tropical summer is dangerous. The biggest risk is from the deadly Box Jellyfish. Alternatives for swimming safely in the Top End of the Northern Territory are several public swimming pools located in all main Northern Territory towns. The good news is that there is a great crocodile park to visit in Darwin. It is called 'Crocodylus Park' and it is located at 815 McMillans Road, Knuckey Lagoon. It is opposite the entrance to the Berrimah Police Centre; this park is very easy to reach, just 5 minutes drive from the airport and with a bus stop within a short walk. Crocodylus Park is very interesting and there are well over one thousand crocodiles ranging from one foot long to 16 foot long crocodiles. This is a leading wildlife research facility, specialising in crocodilian research. Crocodile feeding happens three times a day and there is a range of other animals including monkeys, giant lizards, spectacular birds and big cats. When you visit the Darwin area, go outside at night and look for frog species. You will probably see toads as well, but look at the lit up areas under house eaves or on walls. This is where you will find frogs that are catching insects. Toads will only be on the ground, but they hunt near lit up areas too. So a torch will help you to source them out. The Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks are within a reasonable drive from Darwin. If you stay at the Banyan Springs Caravan Park on the drive into the Litchfield National park, you may see buffalo up close. The manager has 14 buffalo that he may organise for you to see, if you ask him nicely and he is not too busy. On my visit there, I found him and his wife more than helpful and friendly. The park is situated central to all of the Litchfield Park waterfalls and only 12 klms from Batchelor on the Rum Jungle road. Find Batchelor South of Darwin on the Batchelor Road, then follow the Rum Jungle Road, turn off onto the Litchfield National Park Road on the Google maps. These roads are sealed. Uluru or Ayers Rock is in the centre of Australia and the predominant colour of the landscape is red. The surrounding areas are dotted with canyons, valleys and meteorite crators. The rock constantly changes colour. Camel Racing, has become a regular attraction at annual celebrations in the area.
